Why Everyone Is Talking About Laverdia: The New FDA-Approved Oral Treatment for Canine Lymphoma

Hearing the words "your dog has lymphoma" is a moment that stops time. We know that feeling. The world feels a little colder, the room gets a little smaller, and suddenly, you’re faced with a mountain of medical jargon and impossible choices.

For a long time, the path forward felt very narrow. It usually meant intensive, injectable chemotherapy or "palliative care" (focusing on comfort rather than treatment). But the landscape is changing. There is a new name being whispered in vet clinics and shared across support groups: Laverdia-CA1 (verdinexor).

If you’ve been searching for a gentler way, or a treatment that fits into your life rather than taking it over, this post is for you. We’re diving into why Laverdia is making such waves in the dog cancer community and what its recent full FDA approval means for your family.

A New Season of Hope: Full FDA Approval

Until very recently, Laverdia was available under "conditional approval." This meant the FDA believed it was safe and had a "reasonable expectation" of effectiveness. But as of January 2026, that has changed.

Laverdia has officially received full FDA approval.

This is a massive milestone for us as pet parents. Full approval is only granted after rigorous, large-scale clinical field studies prove the drug does exactly what it says it does. For our community, this provides a layer of vetted, research-driven confidence. It means we aren't just "trying something out": we are using a tool that has met the highest standards of veterinary medicine.

What Exactly Is Laverdia?

To understand why this drug is different, we have to look at how it works. Laverdia (the brand name for the drug verdinexor) isn't your traditional "poison the cells" chemotherapy. It belongs to a class of drugs called SINE (Selective Inhibitor of Nuclear Export) compounds.

Inside every cell, there are "tumor suppressor proteins." Think of these as the cell's internal police force. Their job is to find damage and stop the cell from becoming cancerous. However, cancer cells are sneaky. They produce a protein called XPO1 that acts like a bouncer, physically kicking the "police force" out of the cell's nucleus.

Once the tumor suppressors are gone, the cancer cell can grow and divide out of control.

How Laverdia helps:

  • It blocks the XPO1 "bouncer."
  • This keeps the tumor suppressor proteins inside the nucleus where they belong.
  • Once back on duty, these proteins can trigger the cancer cell to stop growing or even die.

It is a targeted, small-molecule approach. It’s smart. It’s precise. And most importantly, it’s evidence-based.

Why the "At-Home" Factor Matters

Traditional chemotherapy usually involves the "CHOP" protocol. This means regular trips to a specialty oncology clinic, needles, IV drips, and hours spent in a waiting room. For many dogs, the stress of the vet visit is as hard on them as the disease itself.

Laverdia is different. It is an oral tablet that you give your dog at home.

Usually, it’s administered twice a week with at least three days between doses. You give it with food, and your dog stays right there on their favorite rug, surrounded by their favorite people.

We believe that quality of life is the "north star" of any cancer journey. For the 80% of dogs who currently go untreated for lymphoma: often because the cost or the travel for traditional chemo is just too much: Laverdia offers a lifeline. It bridges the gap between "doing nothing" and "doing everything."

Addressing the Unmet Need

One of the most heartbreaking statistics in our world is that the vast majority of dogs diagnosed with lymphoma never see an oncologist. Whether it’s due to geography, finances, or the physical toll of travel on a senior dog, many families feel they have no choice but to say goodbye sooner than they want to.

Laverdia is changing that math. Because it is an oral medication, your primary care veterinarian can often manage the treatment. You don't always need a high-end specialty center. This expands access to care to thousands of dogs who would otherwise have no options beyond prednisone.

In clinical studies, Laverdia showed a significantly longer "time to progression" compared to dogs not receiving it. Specifically, dogs on verdinexor saw a median of 37 days before the disease advanced, compared to 23 days in the control group. While that may sound small, in the world of cancer, every extra day of tail wags and sun-spot naps is a gift.

T-Cell vs. B-Cell: A Targeted Approach

If you’ve spent any time on our Healing Paws blog, you know that not all lymphoma is the same. There is B-cell (generally more common and responsive to chemo) and T-cell (often more aggressive).

Laverdia has shown particularly promising results for dogs with T-cell lymphoma. Historically, T-cell cases have been much harder to treat with traditional protocols. Having an oral option that specifically targets the mechanisms of these cells is a game-changer for parents of "T-cell pups."

It also doesn't seem to cause "cross-resistance." This means that if you start with Laverdia and later decide to try traditional chemotherapy, the Laverdia hasn't made the cancer "immune" to other treatments. It can be a standalone therapy, or in some cases, a way to stabilize a dog before starting more intensive treatments.

Real Talk: Side Effects and Safety

We aren't here to give you false hope. Every medication has a trade-off. Because Laverdia is a chemotherapy drug, you do have to handle it with care. We recommend wearing gloves when administering the tablets and being mindful of "bathroom breaks" for the first couple of days after a dose.

Common side effects can include:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Lethargy

The good news? Most of these are "low grade," meaning they are manageable. Because you are the one giving the meds, you have the power to monitor your dog's "sparkle." If they seem off, you can work with your vet to adjust the dose or the schedule.

Quality of Life Above All Else

At the Drake Dog Cancer Foundation, we always say that we aren't just fighting cancer; we are protecting the bond between you and your dog. That bond is made of car rides, shared snacks, and the way they rest their head on your knee when you've had a long day.

Laverdia supports that bond by keeping your dog at home. It’s about minimizing the "medicalization" of their final chapters and maximizing the "living."

If you are feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath. You don't have to make every decision today. We’ve built a community of resources to help you navigate these waters. Questions to Ask Your Vet

If you think Laverdia might be the right path for your pup, here are a few questions to bring to your next appointment:

  1. "Based on my dog's subtype (T-cell or B-cell), how likely is Laverdia to be effective?"
  2. "Can we manage this treatment here at your clinic, or do we need to consult a specialist?"
  3. "What is the cost comparison between Laverdia and a standard CHOP protocol?"
  4. "How will we monitor his liver and kidney values while on this medication?"
  5. "What does 'success' look like for my dog specifically?"
