Can Young Dogs Get Cancer?

Yes. Young dogs can and do get cancer. It is less common than in senior dogs, but it is not rare, and the belief that cancer is strictly an old dog's disease is one of the most costly assumptions a dog owner can make.
In a large study of age at cancer diagnosis in dogs, researchers reviewed 3,452 canine cancer cases and found the median age at diagnosis was 8.8 years. That number gets quoted often. What gets quoted far less is the reported age range in that same cohort: less than 1 year to 20 years (Rafalko et al., 2023). Cancer was diagnosed across the entire canine lifespan, including in dogs who had barely finished teething.
This article covers what the research says about cancer in young dogs, which types actually show up in them, why large breeds face this question years earlier than small ones, and which signs deserve a veterinary visit rather than a wait-and-see approach.
How Common Is Cancer in Young Dogs?
Roughly 1 in 4 dogs will develop cancer at some point in life, and nearly half of dogs over the age of 10 are affected (American Animal Hospital Association, 2026). Those figures accurately describe cancer as a disease weighted toward later life.
The weighting is real. What those figures do not tell you is how the diagnosed cases are distributed across ages, and that is where the "old dog disease" assumption starts to break down.
Among the 3,452 dogs already diagnosed with cancer in the Rafalko et al. (2023) cohort, 58.3%, or 2,012 dogs, received that diagnosis at or before 9 years of age. Even among breeds whose median diagnosis age was 10 years or higher, 38% were diagnosed by age 9.
One caution on how to read that: this was a group of dogs assembled from existing case collections, all of whom already had cancer. The 58.3% figure describes when diagnosed dogs were diagnosed. It is not a statement that 58.3% of all dogs get cancer before age 9, and referral-sourced groups like this one may skew younger than the general dog population. What it does show is that a substantial share of canine cancer is found in dogs who are nowhere near geriatric.
For young dogs specifically, the evidence is more direct than most owners realize. A 2026 analysis of 924 cutaneous mast cell tumors in dogs aged three years and younger included 149 dogs who were one year old or less at diagnosis (Schwinn et al., 2026). That is one tumor type, in one study, in one age bracket. The cases exist.
Cancers That Show Up in Young Dogs
Some canine tumors are genuinely diseases of youth. Others are diseases of old age that occasionally arrive early. Both matter, and they call for very different responses.
Cutaneous Histiocytoma
Cutaneous histiocytoma is a common benign tumor of Langerhans cells that occurs predominantly in young dogs (Diehl & Hansmann, 2024), and it is the one owners most often panic about unnecessarily.
In one 2024 study of affected dogs four years and under, the mean age at excision was 1.84 years (Diehl & Hansmann, 2024). Most affected dogs are under three years old, though the tumor can appear at any age (Williams et al., n.d.).
It typically presents as a button-like red or ulcerated bump. It grows rapidly over the first one to four weeks, which is exactly the behavior that alarms owners, and then many regress on their own over a few months. Surgical removal is advised if ulceration, bleeding, or infection cannot be treated, or if the mass does not shrink within one to two months (Williams et al., n.d.).
The important nuance: rapid growth in a young dog's skin lump is not by itself evidence of malignancy, because this benign tumor grows fast by nature. That is not a reason to skip the veterinary visit. It is a reason to go without dread, and to ask your veterinarian whether a fine needle aspirate can clarify what you are dealing with.
Oral Papillomas
Oral papillomas are benign growths caused by canine papillomavirus, and they are most common in juvenile and adolescent dogs. They appear suddenly, grow and spread quickly, and the condition is frequently self-limiting, with lesions regressing spontaneously within weeks to months (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2024b).
Treatment is usually unnecessary unless the lesions are numerous or interfere with picking up food, chewing, or swallowing (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2024b). A young dog who suddenly develops cauliflower-like growths in the mouth is more likely dealing with a virus than a malignancy.
Mast Cell Tumors
Mast cell tumors are a genuine malignancy, and they do occur in young dogs. The Schwinn et al. (2026) analysis of 849 dogs three years and under found 149 dogs one year or younger, 247 between one and two years, and 453 between two and three years.
Here is the part worth knowing. Using the Kiupel two-tier grading system, 97% of these tumors were low grade and only 3% were high grade. Under the older Patnaik system, 35.7% were Grade I, 62.8% were Grade II, and only 1.5% were Grade III. The researchers noted that the proportion of high-grade mast cell tumors in young dogs was lower than in older dog populations (Schwinn et al., 2026).
The trunk was the most common location at 39.2%, followed by the hind limbs at 24.9%. Breeds with the highest odds ratios were Danish-Swedish farm dogs and English Setters, with Labrador Retrievers, French Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers, Boxers, and Pugs also frequently represented.
A mast cell tumor in a young dog is serious and requires proper diagnosis, grading, and treatment. But the grade distribution offers real, evidence-based reassurance rather than the false comfort of vague optimism.
Osteosarcoma
Osteosarcoma is overwhelmingly a disease of middle-aged and older large breed dogs. In a study of 744 dogs with appendicular osteosarcoma, 36.0% were between 7 and 10 years old and 31.5% were between 10 and 15 (Tuohy et al., 2019).
The relevant detail for young dog owners is that the same researchers noted a bimodal age distribution has been reported for canine osteosarcoma, with a small early peak in incidence between 18 and 24 months (Tuohy et al., 2019).
That early peak is small. It is also the reason a persistent limp, a firm swelling on a limb, or lameness that does not resolve in a young large breed dog should never be assumed to be a sports injury or growing pains without imaging. Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers, and Greyhounds were the most represented purebreds in that cohort.
Lymphoma
Lymphoma and lymphoid leukemia together had a median diagnosis age of under 8 years in the Rafalko et al. (2023) cohort, placing them among the earlier-onset canine cancers. Lymphoma can affect any breed at any age (American Animal Hospital Association, 2026).
Enlarged lymph nodes have many causes in a young dog, and infection or inflammation are common explanations. Lymphoma is another. Telling them apart requires diagnostics rather than observation, so persistent lymph node enlargement is worth an appointment.
Transmissible Venereal Tumor
Transmissible venereal tumor is unusual in that the tumor cells themselves are transmitted between dogs. Transmission commonly occurs during mating, but also through social behaviors including sniffing, licking, scratching, and biting, and dam-to-pup transmission can occur through grooming. Tumors grow rapidly, especially in neonatal and immunosuppressed dogs (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2024a).
Geography matters. It is uncommonly reported in North America and northern and central Europe, but enzootic through the rest of the world, with increased prevalence in tropical and subtropical urban environments. It is the most common canine tumor in the Bahamas, Japan, and India. Metastasis is uncommon at 5%, and the prognosis for total remission with chemotherapy is good, typically requiring 5 to 7 doses of vincristine (Merck Veterinary Manual, 2024a).
Why Large Breeds Face This Question Years Earlier
This is the finding most owners have never heard, and it changes how "young" should be defined.
Rafalko et al. (2023) found an inverse relationship between adult body weight and age at cancer diagnosis, strong enough to model directly. Dogs weighing 2.5 to 5 kg had a median diagnosis age of 11 years. Dogs weighing 75 kg or more had a median diagnosis age of 5 years.
By breed, the youngest median ages at diagnosis were Mastiffs at 5 years, followed by Saint Bernards, Great Danes, and Bulldogs at 6 years. The oldest was the Bichon Frise at 11.5 years. Purebred dogs were diagnosed significantly earlier than mixed breed dogs, with means of 8.2 and 9.2 years respectively.
A 4-year-old Great Dane is not a young dog in oncologic terms. She is approaching her breed's median age at cancer diagnosis. A 4-year-old Bichon has, statistically, another seven years before reaching that same milestone. Treating both as "too young for cancer" is a mistake in one of those two cases.
Warning Signs That Warrant a Visit
The signs of cancer in a young dog are the same signs as in an older dog. What differs is how readily they get dismissed.
Watch for abnormal or rapidly growing swellings, sores that do not heal, loss of appetite, weight loss, bleeding or discharge, difficulty eating or breathing, lameness, and difficulty urinating or defecating (American Animal Hospital Association, 2026).
None of these signs means cancer. In a young dog, most of them will turn out to be something else entirely, and often something minor. But they should prompt a veterinary visit rather than a period of watchful waiting justified by the dog's age.
The practical risk with young dogs is not that veterinarians overlook cancer. It is that owners delay the appointment because the dog is young, and arrive later than they would have with a senior dog showing identical signs.
When Should Cancer Screening Begin?
Rafalko et al. (2023) suggest it may be reasonable to consider annual cancer screening beginning two years before a dog's median age at cancer diagnosis, reasoning from prior work that the preclinical phase of cancer development in dogs is long. In practice, they put that at age 7 for dogs generally, and as early as age 4 for high-risk breeds with lower median diagnosis ages.
For a Mastiff, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, or Bulldog owner, age 4 is the relevant number. That is worth discussing with your veterinarian well before it arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a puppy get cancer? Yes, though it is uncommon. Cutaneous histiocytoma and oral papillomas are benign tumors that occur specifically in young dogs, and malignancies including mast cell tumors have been documented in dogs one year of age and younger (Schwinn et al., 2026).
Is a lump on a young dog usually cancer? Often it is not, and when it is a tumor, cutaneous histiocytoma is a common and benign possibility in dogs under three (Williams et al., n.d.). Ask your veterinarian whether a fine needle aspirate is appropriate, since guessing from appearance alone is unreliable.
At what age do dogs most commonly get cancer? The median age at diagnosis is 8.8 years across all dogs, but this varies enormously by size and breed, from 5 years in Mastiffs to 11.5 years in Bichon Frises (Rafalko et al., 2023).
Should I worry every time my young dog gets a lump? Worry is not useful. A prompt appointment is. The goal is a diagnosis, not vigilance.
The Bottom Line
Cancer in young dogs is less likely than in senior dogs, not impossible. Some tumors, including the common cutaneous histiocytoma and viral oral papillomas, are specifically diseases of youth and are usually benign. Others, including mast cell tumors and occasionally osteosarcoma and lymphoma, are genuine malignancies that appear early enough in some dogs to matter.
For large and giant breeds, "young" ends far earlier than most owners expect.
If something on your dog has changed and stayed changed, the dog's age is not a reason to wait. It is simply one piece of information your veterinarian will weigh alongside everything else.
