  • SDG lignans (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside) are extracted from flaxseed hulls. Flaxseed is by far the richest dietary source.
  • HMR lignans (7-hydroxymatairesinol) are extracted from Norwegian spruce knots.

Both are converted by gut bacteria into enterolactone, a compound that behaves like a mild phytoestrogen in the body. Many veterinarians favor HMR lignans because they tend to be absorbed more quickly and completely than flax-derived SDG lignans, though both are widely used.

How lignans and melatonin work together

Lignans and melatonin are usually recommended as a pair because they target different parts of the same hormonal problem.

Lignans reduce the activity of aromatase, an enzyme involved in producing cortisol and estradiol. By lowering these hormone levels, they ease the hormonal overload behind Cushing's symptoms.
